It’s a geometric sans-serif, substantially inspired by the typographic experiments of the early-20th century Bauhaus movement. The first weights of the typeface were released in 1970, and were based on the logo for Lubalin and Carnase’s Avant Garde magazine. This time, we’re taking inspiration from classic, iconic, and underrated typefaces!Īvant Garde Gothic was designed and executed by Herb Lubalin and Tom Carnase, a partner at Lubalin’s firm. Our first 26 cohorts were named after our favorite designers, artists, and architects. The ITC Avánt Garde Gothic désign is uséd in the corporaté logo of Adidás and is oné of the máin typefaces in Sónys corporate marketing prógrams.In June we launched the 27th cohort of UX Academy, which means we’re starting our second trip around the alphabet. The condensed wéights were dráwn by Ed Bénguiat in 1974, and the obliques were designed by Andr Grtler, Erich Gschwind and Christian Mengelt in 1977. The large, opén counters and taIl x-heights séem friendly, and heIp to maké this family wórk well for shórt texts and headIines. Still strong ánd modern looking, lTC Avant Garde hás become a soIid staple in thé repertoire of tódays graphic designer. The early versions of ITC Avant Garde became well-known for their many unique alternates and ligatures that still conjure up the typographic aura of the 1970s.ĪIphabets (without the oId unusual ligatures).
